How do I move my baby to their own room?

When to move your baby to their own room is a decision only you can make. It is different for everyone, however the transition can be made easier with my tips below.

As a sleep consultant based in Essex, i’ve spoken with many families who are navigating this very stage. Please know you’re not alone, and this doesn’t have to be daunting. With gentle preparation and a few simple steps, this transition can be a positive experience for both you and your baby.

When should you move your baby to their own room?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Every family is unique, and it’s important to make this move when you feel ready.

According to the Lullaby Trust, babies should sleep in your room for at least the first six months, as this reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (sids). But even after six months, it’s perfectly fine to keep your baby nearby for longer if that works best for your family (for example if you do not have a separate room for them to move into.)

If you’re not quite ready for a full move, try creating more space within your room. Move their cot slightly further away from your bed or use a safe divider to give everyone a little breathing room. These small adjustments can help you both sleep better while still staying close for comfort.

Why move your baby to their own room?

Transitioning your baby to their own room can have several gentle benefits — for both of you.

Better sleep for everyone

Babies are sensitive to noise, movement, and light. A separate, calm environment can help them settle more easily and sleep for longer stretches, and you may find your own sleep improves too. If the room is too bright during the day, a Gro Blind can make a huge difference.

Encouraging healthy independence

Moving to their own room helps your baby feel comfortable sleeping independently, laying the groundwork for positive sleep habits as they grow.

Of course, if your little one is still waking frequently or struggling with naps, there may be other factors to explore for example sleep associations, developmental changes, or bedtime routines. That’s where families regularly choose to work with me to provide tailored support.

How to make the transition easier

Moving your baby to their own room doesn’t have to be a big leap. Try these gentle, practical steps to make the process smoother:

1. Create a comfortable, familiar environment

Make your baby’s room a calm, cosy haven for sleep.

  • Keep the cot clear of toys, bumpers, or loose bedding, following the Lullaby Trust’s safe sleep guidelines.
  • Maintain a consistent temperature (around 16–20°c).
  • Use blackout blinds to keep the room dark.
  • Bring familiar items like your white noise machine or their favourite sleep bag to provide comfort.

2. Use a consistent bedtime routine

If you haven’t already, introduce a predictable bedtime routine. A warm bath, gentle baby massage, feed, and bedtime story create a familiar rhythm that signals “sleep time.” Try carrying out this routine in your baby’s new room for a few weeks before the full move to help them feel secure and settled there.

3. Start with naps

If possible, it can be useful to start with daytime naps in their ‘new’ room. Let your baby nap there for a week or two, then transition to nights. Spending calm time in the new room during the day for example reading stories, cuddling, or changing nappies also helps them feel safe in their new space.

4. Be patient and consistent

Even confident sleepers might take a few nights to adjust. That’s completely normal. Stay calm, stick to your usual bedtime routine, and avoid introducing new sleep aids. With a bit of time and consistency, your baby will settle beautifully into their new room.
